In the countryside and villages around Sorrento are a wide range of hotels of all grades. The common denominator they offer is value for money, compared with the same type of hotel in Sorrento itself. You pay a sizable premium for the same hotel if it is sited in Sorrento Town.
You do not have to be cut off from the town either. Many of the hotels offer a free shuttle bus into Sorrento and the local bus service is quite good as well.
If you are visiting with your own transport or a hire car, a hotel outside Sorrento is the common sense place to look, not only with respect to better value for money but the abundance of free parking, unlike in Sorrento Town where parking is an issue.
About hotels in Sorrento countryside
Many of the hotels are in the hills immediately behind Sorrento Town. Most offer the promise of swimming pools and restaurants that overlook the town with great views of the Bay of Naples and Mount Vesuvius.
Watching the sunset here, perhaps at dinner, certainly is a big plus.
A couple of major roads climb up the hills supporting regular local bus services and there are steep walkways down to the town that are a delight. Taxi cabs in this area are expensive though.
Other hotels tend to be strung along the coast road towards Massa Lubrense. The views are arguably not up to the hotels on the hill but still impressive. However the frequency of buses is much higher.
