Visiting Siena, Italy - the main sights

Piazza del Campo, Siena Duomo and Siena highlights

Siena Cathedral (Duomo)
One admission ticket: multiple attractions, Siena Cathedral (Duomo)

The heart of Siena is its central piazza known as Il Campo, famous for the Palio run here, a horse race run around the piazza twice every summer.

For most visitors, the compact medieval heart of Siena is where they will spend all their time.

The Piazza del Campo is at the heart of the city with the cathedral (Duomo) a couple of minutes' walk away, which together contain the principal sights to visit.

The network of largely pedestrianised medieval alleys and lanes immediately around both are of equal attraction with atmospheric shops, bars and restaurants.

Siena Cathedral (Duomo), Baptistery and Museo dell'Opera tickets and passes

The cathedral (Duomo) is one of the finest in Italy and is part of a complex of attractions for which there is a single admission ticket.

The Gothic cathedral building is filled with treasures by Pisano, Donatello and Michelangelo as well as frescoes by Pinturicchio. Siena Cathedral is open six days a week from 10.30am year round; on Sundays and public holidays it is 1.30pm. It closes at 5.30pm in the winter months, 6pm from March to November.

The pass you buy gets you into the cathedral as well as the baptistery, crypt and Opera museum and is valid for 3 days.

There is a special “Gate of Heaven” option in the summer months not included in the standard ticket.

The tour takes you up a steep, hidden staircase leading to the rooftop with breathtaking views into the cathedral and over the rooftops of Siena. Siena Duomo - official website

Piazza del Campo

Piazza del Campo Siena
Main square: Piazza del Campo

Every Italian city has its central piazza where the city's political, social and cultural business took place, and Siena's is magnificent.

The Piazza del Campo was developed in the mid-14th century and is shell shaped like a large amphitheatre with restaurants lining the edges.

The Palazzo Pubblico, one of the main attractions in Siena, is the focus of the piazza. The landmark bell tower rises from the palazzo and from up here there are great views.

Great views from top: Palazzo Pubblico & Bell Tower

The Palazzo Pubblico serves as the town hall of Siena, but the state rooms are open to the public, the Museo Civico. Expect impressive fine art and frescoes.

Torre del Mangia (Bell Tower)

The Torre del Mangia is immediately left of the Palazzo Pubblico and was built in the 14th century.

The 505 steps to the top are rewarded with spectacular views of Siena and the Tuscan countryside beyond. Unfortunately, only small numbers of people are permitted to enter at one time so wait times can be long.

Skip the line: Siena Duomo and city walking tour

You can explore Siena's main sights, its listed Old Town, the central square, Piazza del Campo and visit the stunning Siena Duomo (Siena Cathedral) with a fast-track, skip-the-line entrance ticket.

The two-hour tour gives you an informed introduction to the best that Siena has to offer.

The walking tour first explores the old town and the Piazza del Campo one of the most beautiful squares in Europe. Then onto the Siena Duomo.

After skipping the entrance line with your skip-the-line ticket, your guide will escort you into this breathtaking cathedral, to see impressive masterpieces by Donatello, Bernini and Michelangelo.

Admire the exquisite Gothic architecture, walk through nave arcades with Renaissance busts of popes and emperors and marvel at the unique black-and-white-striped bell tower.
