Heart of Naples: cruise ships at Naples port with Mount Vesuvius in background
The cruise port in Naples is in the Molo Beverello district, in the very heart of the City of Naples. You can just walk directly off the ship and in 10 minutes be in the centre of the City of Naples. Most of Naples main sightseeing attractions are within walking distance or a short bus ride.
Also within about 10-minutes' walk of your ship is the main terminus of the Naples open top, hop-on hop-off sightseeing bus that has three main routes covering all the attractions of Naples, though not outside the city to Pompeii.
If you want to cover Naples, are independently minded and want to make best use of the little time you have, then a 2-hour small group early morning orientation tour of the City of Naples covering all the main sights and access to a local guide is a great way to familiarise yourself with the city, so by mid-morning you can strike out in an informed manner to make best use of your remaining time.
It is pretty straightforward to visit either Pompeii, Mount Vesuvius & Herculaneum under your own steam using the Circumvesuviana trains. The Circumvesuviana train leaves from Naples Porta Nolana Station a couple of miles from the cruise/ferry port so you will need a local bus or taxi for this transfer.

Transport from Naples
The Circumvesuviana trains are mass transit trains that run about every 30 minutes to Pompeii and Ercolano Scavi station for Herculaneum.
Note these trains are not really advised for the old and frail. They are always crowded to the seams and there is a good chance you won't get a seat for part of the journey.
It should also be said that this is not Switzerland so do give yourself good contingency to get back to the ship.
Note for both trains and admissions credit cards are not taken so you need cash (in euros).
Budget option: Circumvesuviana train at Pompeii station
Independently you will probably have time on a cruise excursion to visit one of these. Pompeii is clearly the headline act and is a vast site and is further away from Naples than Herculaneum.
Many people prefer Herculaneum as it is much more compact than Pompeii and the buildings are better preserved. As an independent visitor there isn't much information to make sense of what you are seeing, at minimum you need to invest in the hire of an audio guide.
You will return to the Naples port from your shore excursion tour in good time.
In the very rare event your ship has departed, transport will be arranged for you to the next port of call. If your ship is delayed and you are unable to board the tour, your money will be refunded. See the terms and conditions on the tour detail pages linked below for full details.
