Many visitors arriving or departing from Naples will do so by train. The main train station for Naples where all the long distance trains from elsewhere in Italy stop is Central Station, (Stazione Centrale).
Central Station although out to the east of the city centre is also a major bus terminus, a stop for the Naples airport bus service and has one of Naples Metro lines passing through.
The independent Circumvesuviana rail network also comes through here and is important to visitors as it is these trains that take you to Pompeii or Mount Vesuvius if you are travelling independently.
Although physically part of Central Station the platforms for the Circumvesuviana trains are to one side with their own access and is called Garibaldi Station.
Immediately in front of Central Station is Piazza Garibaldi, a very large square but not particularly attractive as the centre is used as a bus terminus and the square is basically just a large traffic island.
However around the square are a number of the best value hotels in Naples, and all very conveniently within easy walking distance of Central Station.
Although to the east of city centre you can walk to the historic city centre and cathedral in about 20 minutes. The ferry and cruise ship terminal is much further. It would probably take 45 minutes walking but there are frequent local buses.

If you are on a budget, the hotels around Central Station are probably the benchmark you should compare other options to.
As well as being able to walk to your hotel on arriving by train at Naples or off the airport bus, you will also have the trains towards Pompeii, Mount Vesuvius etc on your doorstep.
Although to the east of the city centre you can still easily walk into the historic centre and as Naples main train station, local bus and metro links are excellent to wherever you want to go in Naples.
The other major hotel district are the hotels down by the waterfront of Naples that tend to be more expensive and orientated towards large 4 star options.
This is where the ferry and cruise terminal is located and is the most elegant part of Naples to stay. If you are arriving by train you would need a taxi or local bus to get to your hotel.
Of course if you arrive by ferry or cruise ship this area is very convenient.
