Sorrento and the Neapolitan Riviera is not a traditional budget destination.
Tourism has a long track record here going back long before the mass tourism era. Much of the hotel accommodation in Sorrento town, and certainly the majority of the number of beds are heavily biased towards full service hotels in period buildings that go back well before the modern standard hotel room and hotel block architecture.
However, just like the town of Sorrento that has many facets and sub-districts of entirely contrasting look and feel you can still find small, often family operated budget accommodation scattered throughout the town.
Sorrento itself is hemmed in by the steep terrain behind and to the north of the town, but the urban habitation stretches south from Sorrento along the coast along the flat land above the cliffs.
You will find hotels all along this continuous developed coastline through the resort towns of Sant Agnello, Piano and Meta where the steep hills rise again where prices may be softer than in Sorrento town itself.
Visitor numbers to Sorrento have wide seasonal variations, the main season starting around April. Room rates are volatile with wide variations between seasons.
Availability at budget hotels are also an issue. During peak summer months the small hotels will often be sold out a long time in advance, especially family rooms. Additionally, at peak times some hotels require you to book 2 or 3 nights stay at a time, as is the case on some of our featured hotels, below.
If you are on a budget, an alternative strategy to looking at small cheap hotels in the town is to look at the hotels outside the town of Sorrento. At many times of the year a very nice hotel with outdoor pools, restaurants and great views of the Bay of Naples can be had for a similar price to a budget hotel in the town.
Many of the larger hotels will have free hotel shuttles into Sorrento Town and the local public bus service on the peninsular is very good.
