Pantheon to Trastevere walk route

Trastevere is a district famous for where locals and tourists come to eat, but much of this walk from Piazza Navona all the way to Trastevere via Campo de' Fiori is popular as a place to find somewhere to dine in the evening. And, the choice is overwhelming.

The length of this walk is about 2-3km or around 1.5 miles, if you walked it without stopping at a brisk pace it would be only around 30 minutes.

However, this is the ancient centre of Rome, where every turn, nearly every building is of interest. The beauty of doing this walk independently is you take it at your own pace.

This walk is direct but is full of interest. Apart from crossing a couple of busy roads, you are walking most of the way on narrow lanes where vehicles are as virtually non-existent.

If you stopped at every bar, cafe or restaurant along the way you'd probably need a year.

For further visitor information on the Pantheon see our page Visiting the Pantheon in Rome.

The aim of this page is to focus on the logistical aspects and give sufficient information in text and images so that you can get a good idea of what to expect and allocate in terms of time.

Do get a good guide book and do pick up a detailed street map. Many of the free street maps given out by hotels are adequate. The probability is that you will be attracted by something off the route described here and go off at a tangent, which is all part of the fun of exploring the ancient centre and making your own discoveries.

The Pantheon is the hub from which 4 of our 8 self-guided walks connecting the main sights of Rome either end or start from.

Pantheon towards Trastevere direction

The first section of the walk from the Pantheon to Piazza Navona is signed for pedestrians much of the way.

With your back to the entrance of the Pantheon, walk through to the back of the square lined with restaurants in front of you (Piazza Della Rotonda).

At the back of the square turn left into the Via Giustiniani and follow it until you cross a minor road (Via della Dogana Vecchia) and becomes the Via del Salvatore.

The Via Del Salvatore leads you quickly onto the busy road Corso del Rinascimento. Take care, using the pedestrian crossing to cross to the other side of the road and turn left down the Corso del Rinascimento.

Take the first turning right about 20 yards along the road, (Corsia Agonale) which leads directly into the vast Piazza Navona.

Piazza Navona - more details

Once you have finished with the Piazza Navona our exit is from the bottom, southern exit, (the end to the left as you enter Piazza Navona from Corsia Agonale).

The passage (Via della Cuccagna) that is the middle exit at the south end of Piazza Navona passes the Palazzo Braschi on your right a former palace now a major Rome museum.

The passage almost immediately leads you into a small square (Piazza di San Pantaleo) and a major road (Corso Vittorio Emanuele).

Take care to cross over Corso Vittorio Emanuele using the pedestrian crossing and take the road almost opposite, Via dei Baullari.

The Via dei Baullari in about 100m leads you into the north-west corner of the Campo de' Fiori.

Campo de' Fiori is a bustling market by day and a hub for night-life in the evening. The food market is geared to the needs of visitors rather than locals but nevertheless it's very popular and worthwhile.

When you are ready to leave Campo de' Fiori you're making for the South East corner of the square directly opposite where you entered.

At this corner there is a confusion of options. The passage we want is called Via dei Giubbanari which heads south east and not the Via dei Balestrari which heads south-west. The Cinema Farnese stands on the left hand side of our exit of the Campo de' Fiori.

After around just 75m down the Via dei Giubbanari look for the narrow alley/passage Via dell'Arco del Monte, just past a small open area on your left.

Looking down Via dell'Arco del Monte you can see the Ponte Sisto bridge in the far distance. So just follow Via dell'Arco del Monte and walk over the pedestrian bridge and the River Tiber.

Landmark: Ponte Sisto

Once on the opposite side of the bridge, cross over the road to a small square (Piazza Trilussa) and head to the back left side of the square.

Turning left take the second lane from the left (Via del Moro) and keep going straight along the Via del Moro until the very end where you turn right directly into Piazza Santa Maria, the main square of this part of Trastevere where perhaps its most popular tourist attraction, the church dominates.

Trastevere towards Pantheon direction

With your back to the main entrance of Santa Maria in Trastevere church make your way to the exit on far left of the piazza in front of you and almost immediately turn left into Piazza di Sant'Apilonia/Via del Moro.

Then follow Via del Moro until it exits onto a small piazza opposite Ponte Sisto, pictured on this page, our route across the River Tiber.

Taking care crossing the busy road onto the bridge you will find a road directly opposite the exit to the bridge. Take the road that goes straight ahead, not to the left, this is the Via dei Pettinari which becomes Via dell'Arco del Monte.

When you come to the T junction in about 300m with Via dei Giubbonari turn left and follow Via dei Giubbonari for about 150m into Campo de' Fiori.

Campo de' Fiori is a bustling market by day and a hub for night-life in the evening. The food market is geared to the needs of visitors rather than locals but nevertheless it's very popular and worthwhile.

When you are ready to leave Campo de' Fiori you're making for the north west corner of the square, directly opposite where you entered. Take the Via dei Baullari that exits the northern side of the square about 30m before the extreme north western corner.

The Via dei Baullari leads you in about 100m to a main road, the Corso Vittorio Emanuele. Take care using the crossing to go directly opposite to the small square (Piazza di San Pantaleo). The passage to the right leading off the square is the Via della Cuccagna which takes you north through the southern entrance to Piazza Navona about 100m away.

Once you have finished with the Piazza Navona our exit is the one mid-way up the Piazza on the right (eastern) called Corsia Agonale. This leads immediately onto a major road, (Corso del Rinascimento) where you turn left. Cross the road using the crossing about 20m up the road that leads you directly into the narrow Via del Salvatore. Just keep going straight over a minor road and our way becomes the Via Giustiniani which brings us to the Pantheon, the end of our walk.
