Pantheon to Colosseum walk route

This self-guided walk is a connecting route between the Roman sights of the Roman Forum and Colosseum the Pantheon, with an easy branch off to nearby Trevi Fountain in one direction, and Piazza Navona in the other.

We have separate pages for these walks: Spanish Steps to Trevi Fountain, the Pantheon to the Vatican via Piazza Navona.

The length of this walk is relatively short, about 1.5 km or a mile, if you walked it without stopping at a brisk pace it would be only around 20 minutes. However, this is the ancient centre of Rome, where every turn and nearly every building is of interest. The beauty of doing this walk independently is you take it at your own pace and take as long as you like.

For further visitor information on the Colosseum and Pantheon see our pages Visiting the Colosseum and Roman Forum and Visiting the Pantheon in Rome.

The walk also has a small extension up Capitoline Hill to the Capitoline Museum.

The aim of this page is to focus on the logistical aspects and give sufficient information in the form of text and images so that you can get a good idea of what to expect and allocate in terms of time.

Do get a good guide book and do pick up a detailed street map, many of the free street maps given out by hotels are adequate. Probability is that you will be attracted by something just off the route described here and go off at a tangent, all part of the fun of exploring the ancient centre and making your own discoveries.

Both the Pantheon and the Capitoline Hill are points where you can link in with our other walks linking the major sights of Rome.

Pantheon to the Colosseum direction

Standing in front of the Pantheon in the Piazza della Rotonda facing the front of the Pantheon take the road down the left hand side of the Pantheon, the Via della Minerva, which almost immediately brings you to the Piazza della Minerva with the St Maria Minerva Basilica dominating the piazza.

Turn left at the piazza down the Via di Santa Caterina da Siena with the basilica on your left and a grand hotel on your right. After around 50m keep going straight and the way has become the Via di Pie di Marmo which leads into a small piazza, Piazza del Collegio Romana. Ignore the turning to the right at the piazza and keep going straight soon coming to the busy Via del Corso.

Turn right down the busy Via del Corso past the Doria Pamphilj Palace immediately on your right. Straight ahead of you the huge white Victor Emmanuel Monument dominating Piazza Venezia attracts your attention and it's Piazza Venezia that we head for.

For many tourists Piazza Venezia is perhaps the centre of Rome. As well as having many of Rome's finest attractions in close proximity it's a major traffic junction where many of the larger roads that can accommodate bus and coaches all meet.

Central: Victor Emmanuel Monument, Piazza Venezia

Because of the traffic, Piazza Venezia is a bit of a pain to negotiate.

If you want to go up Capitoline Hill which has amongst others the Capitoline Museum best to keep to the right hand side of the Via del Corso and passing the Palazzo Venezia on Piazza Venezia on your right before ascending the Cordonata staircase up to the Capitoline Museum.

If your goal is the Roman Forum and the Colosseum then cross over to the left hand side of Via del Corso to negotiate the other side of Piazza Venezia.

Take the wide and straight Via dei Fori Imperiali to the left of Victor Emmanuel Monument with Trajan's Markets and Trajan's Column on your left. The Via dei Fori Imperiali takes you to the Colosseum where our walk ends which you can now see straight ahead.

Colosseum to the Pantheon direction

From the Colosseum we take the wide straight Via dei Fori Imperiali past the metro Station on your right and with the Roman Forum on your left follow the wide road all the way up to Piazza Venezia and the imposing huge white Victor Emmanuel Monument.

If you want to head up to the views and attractions on Captoline Hill, notably the Capitoline Museum you can take the narrow lane up the hill just before you get to Piazza Venezia or you can walk around the Victor Emmanuel Monument and climb the Cordonata staircase directly up to the Capitoline Museum.

Our way out of the Piazza Venezia is the Via del Corso one of the many road arteries that spin off the Piazza Venezia. On the Via dei Fori Imperiali keep to the right hand side of the road before reaching Piazza Venezia and pass Trajan's Markets and Trajan's Column on your right.

The Via del Corso is the exit directly opposite the large white Victor Emmanuel Monument pictured above.

When you can cross over to the left hand side of the Via del Corso. The second exit on your left about 100m up the Via del Corso immediately after a pedestrian crossing is our turn off. Above head height there is pedestrian signpost indicating the route to Piazza della Minerva.

The short road Via Lata leads you directly into the Piazza del Collegio Romana, continue straight out the other side of the piazza and the road has become the Via di Pie di Marmo. Just keep going straight, the road becomes the Via di Santa Caterina da Siena.

The Via di Santa Caterina da Siena leads you to the Piazza della Minerva, dominated by the St Maria Minerva Basilica pictured above. Turn right here at the junction, walking down the side of the Pantheon to its front entrance on the Piazza della Rotonda, the end of our walk.
