Cheap: Volainbus, Santa Maria Novella (SMN) railway station, Florence |
Located just 4km (2.5 miles) from the centre of Florence, "Amerigo Vespucci" as it is known is a small airport with a relatively restricted route network.
Much busier is Pisa Airport, 85km (50 miles) from Florence more widely used, including the low cost budget airlines like Ryanair and easyJet, as well as traditional national carriers like British Airways.
Leisure travellers tend to be attracted to Pisa over Florence also by the generally lower air fares driven down by the low cost budget airlines.
For the transfer between Florence Airport and the city centre, you have four main choices.
In order of price, lowest cost is the new T2 tramline that runs from the airport and terminates at Piazza dell'Unità Italiana, this currently costs €1.50. The T2 tram tickets run for 90 minutes, so as long as your journey is within that time, you can move to another tram or bus to complete your journey if needed. Next up is the scheduled bus service called Volainbus that runs to a bus station close to the main railway station in Florence, Santa Maria Novella (SMN).
There is also a shared van shuttle and taxi/private car service that both provide door to door service to and from your Central Florence hotel.
In February 2019 a new second tram line - T2 Vespucci - connecting SMN Central station to the Airport of Florence Vespucci launched.
On all buses and trams you must purchase tickets in advance, from authorized sales points (newsagents, etc), from the ATAF hall which is inside the SMN train station or from the automatic machines which are at every tram stop. You can also buy tickets for trams and buses at the baggage reclaim area at the airport.
Another cheap transfer option between Florence Airport and Florence City Centre is the Volainbus bus that runs a non-stop route between the airport and the Bus Italia bus station next to Santa Maria Novella (SMN) railway station, which is on the edge of the historic centre of Florence.
The bus service runs every 30 minutes from the airport from 5.30am to mid-evening before frequencies drop to until past midnight. Journey time is scheduled at 20-30 minutes.
Unlike Florence city buses you can purchase tickets from the driver with no price penalty, you can also use your contactless card to purchase tickets on the bus by using the card validator.
Note: Return tickets cannot be bought from the driver only one-way tickets. You can buy return tickets at ATAF (the bus company) ticket offices which include most tobacconists/ newsstands in Florence as well as ATAF outlets at SMN station and the coach station nearby.
You can also buy tickets for the bus and trams at the baggage reclaim area in the airport. Tobacconists/ newsstands may only carry local bus tickets at locations where few visitors visit.
If you prefer the convenience of door to door transfers to/from your Florence Hotels then a shared van shuttle may be of interest.
Over 100 Florence hotels and apartment are supported, for a full list click through on the banner links below and select the "view additional info" link, down the page.
This is not a flat fare service. The price you pay goes down the more people in your party.
Travel between Florence Airport and your Florence hotel in the luxury of an air-conditioned private vehicle. Transfer services are available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. The service includes meet n greet for airport arrivals.
This is a private transfer so the price is the same for groups of:
- 1 to 3 people (Mercedes E-Class)
- 4 to 7 people (Mercedes Viano)
- 8 people (Mercedes Vito)
For flights it's no problem if you are late - we monitor incoming flights regularly, so we can accommodate any unexpected changes. If there is a delay on your flight our driver will know and arrive at the airport just before you do, ready to greet you and carry your luggage to a comfortable car.
