Reach beautiful Siena by bus from Florence in a day

Siena is a lovely medieval town located about 73km (45mi) south of Florence, well within range of a day visit independently by public transport or through a choice of tours available.

The Piazza del Campo is at the heart of the city and for most visitors the principal sights they want to see are either on the square or in the network of alleys immediately around the Piazza.

Public transport between Florence & Siena

You can travel between Florence and Sienna by bus or train, both take similar journey times, the express bus option is scheduled 10 minutes or so faster.

In Florence the bus and train stations are adjacent to one another. In Siena the bus terminus is just south of the medieval town centre.

Follow the crowds into the maze of the medieval centre and you will reach the Piazza del Campo or Duomo where most people want to go in about a 10-minute walk.

The train station is much further away from the centre on the edge of town about 2km from Piazza del Campo. Both direct train and bus services from Florence start running down from around 9pm.

The bus station in Florence where the Siena buses run from is adjacent to the main Santa Maria Novella Train Station of Florence on the western edge of the historic centre.

The bus line is called SITA and they run two services, one an express service, the other a slower stopping service.

The express rapid service takes 75 minutes, slightly faster than the train. The stopping service takes around 100 minutes.

The express rapid service which nearly all visitors take runs at least a couple of times an hour.

You can buy tickets on the day from the ticket office in the bus station, there are no seat reservations. Return tickets are flexible, you can come back on the first bus leaving Siena.

Train from Florence

For most visitors the bus gets the nod over the train because of the position of Siena Railway Station away from the centre.

If you want to take the train, frequencies are broadly hourly and take around 90 minutes, normally with a change of train along the way.

The TrenItalia website has English language pages and timetables and online advance e-ticketing. On some shorter urban journeys it is not possible to buy tickets online.

Note: When using on-line ticketing and travel planning systems they use the Italian name of Florence, which is Firenze.
