Rome Fiumicino airport is near the coast, to the west of Rome city centre. Fiumicino is the major airport serving Rome. The other, Ciampino airport is mostly low cost budget airlines and charters.

The airport is pretty much a standard international airport with all the usual facilities like car hire and left luggage. The airport is particularly proud of its very large shopping area.
Within the airport is a railway station with frequent trains to Rome city centre (Termini Station). There are also suburban trains that go around the edge of Rome interconnecting with major train and metro stations.

Terminals
Terminal A is where domestic flights arrive and depart from, though other flights use Terminal A as well.
Many intercontinental flights use the satelite T5 terminal.
Alitalia flights are spread out and not confined to one terminal.

Transfers To Rome & Beyond

By public transport the most straightforward option is the Leonardo Express train that runs every 30 minutes.
The Leonardo Express runs non-stop to Termini Station, the main transport hub in the centre of Rome. Termini Station Hotels are a very convenient area for accommodation for independent visitors.

There is also a cheaper local train alternative that connects with the Rome Metro and other major train stations in the suburbs of Rome.

For inter city trains to the rest of Italy you will need to first travel into Rome, there are no direct trains.
Currently there is no direct public transport to Rome's other airport Ciampino.
Taxi Services
There is of course a taxi rank outside each terminal at Fiumcino.
The rank cabs are licensed to carry 4 people and have limited luggage capacity for that many.
Private advance purchase taxi's with larger luggage capacities and English speaking drivers are also available.

The journey into Rome will depend on traffic conditions but should take around 40-60 minutes. Supplements might be asked for luggage, night-time runs and public holidays.

Scheduled Hotel Shuttle Bus
There is a mini bus service that provides an airport to hotel service but unlike the taxi's run on a shared basis. The service will go to nearly all hotels in Central Rome (defined by being inside the railway line that loops around the city)

The mini buses have 8 seats and run around every 30-40 minutes. Seats must be prepurchased.
