By the nature of Rome's narrow streets the scope for classic coach tours of Rome's main sights are severely restricted. Buses are restricted to just a few arteries through the city centre.

Places like the Trevi Fountain, Spanish Steps and Pantheon are not accessible by tour buses,

Nearly all guided tours are thus walking tours, sometimes with a hotel pickup to get you to the place of interest.

Remember entrance to basilicas require appropriate attire, especially at the Vatican where even on hot days there is routinely a steady stream of males barred with shorts. No shorts, miniskirts or uncovered shoulders.
It is also advisable of course to wear comfortable walking shoes, the lanes of Rome can be very uneven, and in the summer it gets very hot.

The tours listed in the table below, provide access to all the main sights.
A trained knowledgeable guide adds real value to your visit bringing alive places like the Roman Forum that with minimal information can be otherwise frustrating.

Rome Hop On Hop Off Buses
A favourite way of sightseeing are the Rome hop on, hop off buses of which there are many. These buses at the very least give an informed orientation tour of all that's worthwhile in Rome.

All the operators use very similar double deck open top buses.
Each passenger will get a disposable audio device for commentary along the way with a choice of at minimum 8 languages.

Most operators will sell you a ticket of 24 or 48 hours duration from the time you start. Ciao Roma sell tickets based on calendar days.
Different operators have significant differences in rules for age bands for children to enjoy discounted or free travel.

Some operators offer a heavily discounted ticket where you cannot do the hopping on and off, you just stay on the bus for one lap of the route.

Some operators make available a discounted ticket available valid just for a single afternoon/evening.
