Hotels close to the Vatican City are surprisingly varied, even within 1km of the St Peter's Square. There are a number of excellent economical bed and breakfasts near Vatican City as well as the normal mainstream hotels.
Bed & Breakfast accommodation immediately around the Vatican on the whole gets good feedback from guests. Most are only two or three rooms and the owners are often there to give you personal advice.

The Vatican is a good choice for accommodation, you can walk across the river and soon be visiting the Pantheon, Trevi Fountain and Spanish Steps in the old town part of Rome.
Vatican Hotel District Rome On the north side of the river, St Peters and Saint Angelo Castle dominate the landmarks.
The normal approach is across one of the bridges by foot or bus then with St Paul's directly in front of you walking down the impressive Via della Concilazione.

The Metro has 3 stops around the Vatican just to the north of St Paul's. Nearly all the accommodation in this area is north of St Paul's, clearly the further north you go the more economical the room rates.

There is also a tram route 19 - by changing to the route 3 tram at Villa Borghese you can do an interesting curcuit of inner Rome around to the Colosseum.
Hotel Close to Vatican City Rome Immediately around Vatican City are some large 4 star hotels which can offer good value, especially 'off-season'
You may wish to consider the quieter hotels near Piazza Cavour. The Pantheon, Spanish Steps and Trevi Fountain are all a similar 15 minute walk than the Vatican City
