Most
visitors to Rome will have a few must see sights they want to see
in Rome , commonly The Forum, Colosseum, Vatican, Trevi Fountain,
Pantheon and Spanish Steps. The public transport infrastructure is
limited in Central Rome, you will probably need and want to do a lot
of walking. It makes sense to be within the area of these attractions
and start walking right away. However such hotels carry a definite
price premium.
For most independent travellers they will be arriving at Termini Station
to the south and east of the main attractions. This area has the most
economical and most numerous hotel accommodation in Rome. |
Termini
Station Hotel Accommodation
Termini
Station is the main transport hub in Rome City Centre. The two metro
lines intersect here and the main central bus station is in front
of the terminus. Termini is also the terminus of most to Rome on the
Italian rail network. Trains to Leonardo da Vinci (Fiumicino) Airport
also run from the station and the bus to Ciampino starts here.
The station is quite a modern affair with lots of shops, travel agencies,
fast food, even a supermarket on several levels. |
 |
Like
many other city centre stations, e.g. Kings Cross in London or Gare
du Nord in Paris the hotel accommodation is among the cheapest in
the city, immediate surroundings though are not the most attractive
in the city.
Most of the roads are busy and bustling until very late so noise is
more common than other areas. Having said that few people won't feel
safe in the area.
The pluses too are many. Local public transport access is unparalleled
and there is easy access to all main sights. Restaurant choices are
huge, very reasonably priced and the clientele probably being Italian
in many places. Very few restauarants here are exclusively targetted
at the visitor to the city, but all are used to serving visitors. |
Hotels
Near Colosseum
The
Colosseum at the eastern end of the Forum has a hotel area to the
north. Room
rates tend to be more expensive than around Termini but below those
of the old town area around the Pantheon and Trevi Fountain.
There is a good range of accommodation off Via Nacionale which runs
from Termini to Piazza Vieneza. From these you can easily walk to
all the main draws, except perhaps Vatican City. |

Hotels
Around Vatican City
There is a surprisingly varied selection of hotel accommodation near
Vatican City. Within sight of St Peter's are several of the best bed
and breakfasts in Rome at extremely economical rates. There are also
a few very large four stars which can offer very good value, especially
off-season.
In terms of location, perhaps the best area is in the east of the
district. Relatively quiet and easy stroll over the Tiber to the Pantheon,
Trevi Fountain and onto the Forum and Colosseum. |
