Cheap hostels suitable for backpackers in Rome are plentiful and cheap. Many have private rooms as well as the cheap dormitory accommodation.
The majority of hostels in Rome are clustered around Termini station,
the public transport hub in Rome. The likelihood is that this is where
you will arrive in Rome, whether by train or airport bus/train.
The area around Termini train station is full of budget accommodation
and there is plenty of launderettes, Internet cafes and cheap places
to eat.
It is around Termini Station that you will find the single largest concentration of hotels in Rome, and the district is very much a benchmark district for accommodation.
As Termini is the city centres local transport hub too, (the two metro lines intersect and the main bus station is here), it also means very good connections with all the sights.
Most have mixed dormitories with 4 to 8 beds, a few have female only dormitories.
All hostels differ in some respects but generally small free personal lockers, (bring your own lock) and larger luggage can be put in a special facility. Few hostels have curfews and nearly all have 24 hour staff on duty.
During the most popular months Rome is quite expensive for hotels, but if you are coming at slacker periods its worth checking out hostels v hotels for value for money if there are two or more of you.
