The majority of hostels in Rome are clustered around Termini station, the public transport hub in Rome. The likelihood is that this is where you will arrive in Rome, whether by train or airport bus/train.
The area around Termini train station is full of budget accommodation and there is plenty of launderettes, Internet cafes and cheap places to eat.

Many of the hostels have laundries, kitchens and free Internet/wi-fi that will help keep the overall cost of your visit down. Most have mixed dormitories with 4 to 8 beds, but some hostels have women only dormitories.
The Orsa Maggiore is a women only hostel in an old Convent in the atmospheric Trastevere district.
Termini is the public transport hub for Central Rome. From Termini it is possible to go direct by the limited Rome Metro service to the Colloseum, Spanish Steps and Vatican. Buses will take you everywhere else.

Termini is also the main start point for the multitude of Rome Hop on Hop Off buses.
