Budget hotels In Rome, like all hotels here, have highly volatile room rates depending on season. During the popular summer months rates are about double that of the winter. At the height of the season when rates are high, the words cheap and budget really only mean relative to more expensive hotels.
Rome, at least the part that visitors want to see is a very compact area. Walking is often the best way of getting around. There are only two metro lines, so staying too far outside this central area is not that practical, unless you can get a hotel near a Metro or Rail Station.
There is a very good chance that Termini Station will be your place of arrival in Rome. Termini being the city centre terminus for airport buses and trains and also long distance trains from other Italian cities and beyond.
It is around Termini Station that you will find the single largest concentration of hotels in Rome, and the district is very much a benchmark district for accommodation. The intense competition of budget hotels around Termini keeps rates competitive. As the city centres local transport hub, (the two metro lines intersect and the main bus station is here), it also means very good connections with all the sights.
There are very few familiar brand name chain hotels and as yet, no low cost, no frills chains in the centre. The only global budget / mid range brand, properly represented in the city centre is Best Western.
The hotels on this page are all budget three star classification. We have included a couple of chain hotels, the Mercure and Express Holiday Inn that are a couple of miles outside the centre, but close to a Metro Station that will soon get you into the centre.
We have another page on cheap Bed & Breakfast hotels in Rome, that may also attract those watching their wallet.
