For motorists, perhaps touring Italy, the prospect of navigating Rome's centre is not an inviting one. In the city centre, space is at a premium, parking is scarce and expensive.

Where street parking is available, parking is almost an art form squeezing into the rare spaces that do become available. Double parking is common.


The hotels that do offer parking are typically top of the range that charge typically €30-€40 per day, sometimes not on-site and have to be booked in advance.


The sensible thing to do for visitors with cars is to find a hotel in the suburbs and use public transport into the centre, some hotels offer a shuttle which normally is not complementary and often not that frequent. Many of the Rome Metro stations have very good parking facilities. The parking symbol is marked on stations that have it on the Metro train maps. Some of the commuter train stations also have car parks.

You may still be charged for parking even at the hotels furthest from the centre.


A lot of the large global brands like Holiday Inn, Sheraton, Marriott and Crowne Plaza have their hotels also in the suburbs. These invariably are in spacious grounds with swimming pools and resort style facilities, one of the advantages of staying away from the city centre.
